What Does the 'M' in MTV Stand For?

This is a rhetorical question. I know the M in Mtv is suppose to stand for music. Does Mtv even play music any more or have they played to the lowest common denominator yet again!? I can't remember the last time I saw an actual music video on Mtv. What happened to the days when you were sure to see a twisted Nirvana video or a crappy glam band waving their blow dried hair around every time you turned on the tube?

Where Mtv is concerned I don't know what came first, the chicken or the egg. Does Mtv cut across the gain and that is why they are hip, or do they only try to show the stuff that they think is already cool? I believe it is the latter of the two when ever I watch their every growing array of reality shows. Someone, please tell me, is Laguna Beach a reality show or just a spoiled teeny bopping show with soap opera type acting? I caught and episode of "That 70's House", come on, are you serious....They are really scraping to fill air time now. "That 70's House" is a reality show that puts 10 late teen early twenties people in an old Brady Bunch style house and everything they do, eat, say, wear, has to be 70's. If they are not "70's" enough they get kicked out, the winner gets a poke in the eye or something.
I even saw a show called, "date my mom" or something like that. If you haven't seen this show make it a point to do so. It is so staged it is embarrassing to watch. You will laugh out loud at this obviously choreographed "reality" show. When I watched it I seriously got an image in my head of a crazy haired director behind the camera saying "ok, now ask the mom if her daughter wears a thong." It truly made me cringe.

And Viva La Bam.... More like Viva La Bad Acting and Writing. There is no way this is a true reality show. It is more staged than my fifth grade play.

My point is, MTV should change its name or logo or something else. They should be the reality network for wanna-be hip, drama driven, do anything to be cool, "give into peer pressure because everyone is doing it", people out there.

Ok, I know what you are saying "you make fun of it but you are obviously watching it!" why do I patronize a channel that is so fake?......I guess something inside me still thinks I may see a music video if I watch long enough.

Hey, I gave up MTV when I was about 15 years old because the only time they would play music videos was in the middle of the night back then. And yes, yours truly, who was born in 1980 (same year as MTV) would stay awake all night watching them. This has led to my demise, I might add that soon after, I developed insomnia, failed to make it to high school on time or at all. Television soon came out with MTV2, it was supposed to play nonstop music videos which I thought was an awesome idea except for 1 out of 100 videos were recognizable. The last time I checked, MTV2 sold out and is warping into MTV as far as the crap they put on it. As influential as it is, I had to give it up, call me a quitter if you must. I lost complete interest when MTV Cribs came out, otherwise known as: Who wants to feel like a failure in life!
PS Thanks for updating

Kasysea,
you are very welcome for the updates. MTV is such a joke not, it has become a parody of itself. weird. The only videos it shows not is rap, and all those vidoes are the same. It is an exact fomula, chains around the neck, half naked women shaking their butts, and 12 guys standing in fron the the camera pointing at the lense while one guy raps/. pretty crappy. hey, you may find this interesting. i have a homepage now. homepages.wmich.edu/~q4hunt take a look.

"chains around the neck"
I think you are referring to the BLING. =)

I feel your pain. Just last night I was using my radio and surfing the stations with the dial out of boredom. (The old fashioned tune kind, not digital with the seek button or anything.) I was completely shocked to hear rap on a station I never knew existed. (I live in the middle of nowhere right now and it was 3am by the way) So I thought I would give it a chance- I couldn't do it. I heard nothing but: Crack-Bitches-Hos etc... It really disturbs me to know that young children brain wash themselves like programming a computer with this sh*t. And we wonder why we have societal problems like we do.

Brain wahshing is right. I am not going to say Rap or any music for that matter is responsible for the decline of civil society. But i am sure it had an influence. I work with troubled kids, and they seriously think that is the way things are suppose to be. Shooting, robbing, smoking, etc, all the crab that ganstar rap glorifies. Really sad. I understand that they are just rapping about where they came from and what they went through and all that, but that doesn't mean it is suppose to be idolized. It is almost becoming a good thing to be from a broken home and be abused as a child and slangin' dope just so you can clame you have street cred. twisted.

Very twisted, and that is their life. My Sociology Teacher two semesters ago said that they are a negative subculture with in a culture that is no more normal than the Amish. Both are seen as a threat. Do you like your job?
