I saw one of the most powerful, homemade bumper stickers today. I was driving north on 131 in Michigan, when I passed a old mid 90's Ford Ranger. I was going about 75, he 65, so I passed him rather fast. Just before I made the pass I caught a homemade slogan stuck to the back of his cap. It was pasted on with the type of lettering you would use to put your name on your mailbox. I thought I saw something interesting so i slowed down and got behind the man long enough to read it. What I saw summed thousands of words. Summed up what many conservative talk radio hosts and many bloggers have been trying to say for years. It was creative, witty, and simple. I passed the man and gave him thumbs up, he smiled and returned the gesture. The crudely made message read "Born 7-4-1776 Died 11-4-2008"
Classic.

Dude, you misspelled "Public".
But the story is interesting.
ha ha, thats ok, no one reads this
There is a conference address given by Ezra Taft Benson called "Our Divine Constitution." I think you should read it. I turn to it all the time to remind myself of my civic responsibilities. It is so important that we pay attention to what is going on in our nation and the world. Was it the "Bill of Rights" or the Constitution that you recently read? I can't remember. I trust our prophet. We would have had a different message from him last year if we needed to take certain action.
I have been disappointed by our government lately and I can only do what I can do. The problem that I have with that guy's bumper sticker is the defeatist attitude. I'm upset but I haven't thrown in the towel yet.
And you thought no one read your blog!
p.s. You should search out google analytics. You can set it so that you can see who actually does read your blog.
Candace, thanks for the tips. i have to agree with you. I hope the country moves in the right direction. BUT, if Obama succeeds in his plans, the country will fail. So, do I want Obama to fail, or the country to fail? If Obama decides to trim Gov spending and not socialize everything, then I have his back and I will eat my words. until he does that, I am not a fan.
I'm not talking about just Obama. We need to think more locally. I know that Mike sent an email to Levin and one to Stabenau. You are writing a political blog, which people are reading. That is powerful. You have to make sure that you are encouraging the things that we can do and should do. Otherwise, you are still playing into the blame trap of not recognizing the power of the congress and senate. We need to recognize the power of more local leaders too.
Benson says that "we must make our influence felt by our vote, our letters, our teaching, and our advice." And further said "I testify that the God of heaven sent some of His choicest spirits to lay the foundation of this government, and He has now sent other choice spirits to help preserve it."
Don't forget that Joseph Smith said "Even this nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground, and when the Constitution is upon the brink of ruin, this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean, and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction." So NOT destroyed then. Read "Our Divine Constitution." I would love to know what you feel that we should do to move forward according to this counsel.

I was thinking along similar lines to what Candace is saying. Why didn't the country "die" under Carter or Clinton? Or Johnson or FDR for that matter. As far as I can see right now, the politicians can wound the country, but aren't in a position to kill it altogether... yet.
Mike, Candace,
the country will never "die" all together. incrementlism will bring it down peace by peace until we are just a hollow shell of the former USA. Policies we have now are already so far from what the founding fathers had in mind. If we get taxed any more, it will be just like what britain was doing to us in 1750-1775, taxation without representation. The majority of our tax money is already going toward things we do not agree with. Atleast I know mine is.
candace, I will read Our Divine Constitution
I don't know if it was a type-o, but I like the "peace by peace" in the last comment. It is the destruction of the family unit that will ultimately destroy a great country, at least this one. It is important to love and support our neighbor and not let bad feelings rule our decisions. i know this has little to do with current policies, but my field of "soapboxing" is narrow. scottthegreat.
Scott, that was a typo, and I couldn't agree more with the family unit comment. Stalin said of Russia, that the fastest way to form a communistic government is to erode the moral integrity of a society. simply put, an inmoral community will turn to the government for a "bail out" or for help than a morally sound community.
I think of this quote by Joseph Smith quite a bit:
I teach them correct principles and they govern themselves.
* Quoted by John Taylor, in Journal of Discourses, 10:57-58
* When asked his approach to governing his people at Nauvoo, Illinois.
ooo, great quote. I will have to use that one. you and candace are just a wealth of quotes and publications.
